Juvéderm® ULTRA PLUS XC is an injectable implant intended to treat mid- and/or deep-sized skin depressions via mid and/or deep dermis injection. It can also be used for enhancement and definition of the lips. The presence of lidocaine is meant to reduce the patient’s pain during treatment. Treatment with this product is indicated for adults (over the age of 18).
- This Juvéderm® formulation is a sterile pyrogen-free physiological solution of cross-linked hyaluronic acid (HA) which is not of animal origin.
- The gel is presented in a graduated, prefilled, disposable syringe. Each box contains two 1mL syringes, 4 single-use 27G1/2” sterile needles to be used only for injecting this Juvéderm® product, an instruction leaflet and a set of labels in order to ensure traceability.
Injection Technique:
- Due to its density, this Juvederm® formulation requires deep dermal or subdermal injection.
- A 25G or 27G needle is commonly used for controlled placement.
- Cannulas can be a safer option for specific areas like cheeks and chin to minimize bruising and bleeding risks.
- Injection technique will vary depending on the desired outcome:
- Linear threading for deep wrinkle filling
- Deep layer bolus injections for volumization
- Layering technique for combined wrinkle filling and volume augmentation
Important Considerations:
- Juvederm® Ultra Plus XC is for licensed practitioners trained in advanced dermal filler injections.
- Deep understanding of facial anatomy is crucial to ensure safe placement and avoid complications like vascular occlusion.
- Aseptic technique is essential to minimize infection risks.
- Lidocaine helps with pain management, but additional local anesthesia might be necessary for some patients.
- Massage the injected area gently to ensure even product distribution.
- Advise patients on potential side effects like bruising, swelling, and tenderness, which may last longer due to deeper injection.
Additional Tips:
- Employ blunt cannulas for areas with rich blood vessels, like the cheeks, to reduce bruising.
- Use aspiration during injection to minimize vascular occlusion.
- Start with a conservative amount of filler and perform touch-ups if needed after two weeks.
- Advise patients to avoid excessive manipulation of the injected area for several days.
Remember:
- This Juvederm® product is not intended for the under-eye area or lip augmentation in patients with thin lips.
- Refer to Allergan’s product information for full prescribing details, safety instructions, and potential contraindications.
Contraindications:
- Do not inject this solution in the eyelids, crow’s feet and glabellar region. The application in the under-eye area is to be performed only by health care professionals specifically trained in this technique who have a sound knowledge of the physiology of this particular area.
- Do not inject into the blood vessels (intravascular). Intravascular injection may lead to embolisation, occlusion of the vessels, ischaemia or infarction.
- Do not overcorrect.
- Must not be used in:
- patients suffering from untreated epilepsy;
- patients who tend to develop hypertrophic scarring;
- patients with known hypersensitivity to hyaluronic acid and/or to gram positive bacterial proteins as hyaluronic acid is produced by Streptococcus type bacteria;
- patients with known hypersensitivity to lidocaine or to amide-type local anaesthetics;
- patients suffering from porphyria;
- women who are pregnant or breastfeeding;
- children.
- Must not be used in areas presenting cutaneous inflammatory and/or infectious processes (acne, herpes, etc.).
- Should not be used simultaneously with laser treatment, deep chemical peels or dermabrasion. For surface peels, it is recommended not to inject the product if the inflammatory reaction generated is significant.
After-care:
- You should not use any makeup for at least 12 hours following the injection treatment.
- You should avoid extended exposure to the sun, ultraviolet (UV) rays and temperatures below 0°C, as well as any sauna or hammam sessions, during the two weeks following the injection treatment.

About the product
JUVÉDERM® Ultra Plus XC is a smooth gel filler that will instantly smooth away wrinkles around the mouth and nose. It works by helping to replace the hyaluronic acid that skin has lost with age, adding volume to 'fill out' and smooth away facial wrinkles and folds. Designed to treat moderate to severe facial wrinkles and creases, such as nasolabial folds. The product contains lidocaine, which makes the treatment painless and comfortable for the patient.
We have other products under the JUVÉDERM® brand, like JUVÉDERM® VOLUX® with Lidocaine.
