What Is BOTULAX® Used For?

The muscle-paralyzing properties of BOTULAX® allow it to be used for the following conditions:

Wrinkles: BOTULAX® inhibits the transmission of signals at the facial neuromuscular junctions. Wrinkles are partly caused by unwanted contraction of facial muscles or their resting tone. This means BOTULAX® can treat crow's feet, frown lines, and forehead lines.
Muscle spasms: Muscular spasms such as in cervical dystonia, torticollis, or even lock-jaw can be treated with an injection of BOTULAX®. It stops neural input to these muscles, causing them to relax. It is also useful for spastic muscles, such as those that develop after a stroke.
Excess sweating: BOTULAX® is also used for hyperhidrosis. It blocks nerve signals to sweat glands that release sweat. This is helpful for individuals who feel embarrassed or experience discomfort due to excessive sweating.
Migraine: BOTULAX® is used for migraine that is chronic and does not respond to traditional treatment. It blocks the release of neurotransmitters like P and glutamate, reducing pain signal transmission. BOTULAX® also relaxes muscles of the face and neck, whose contraction is thought to contribute to migraine partially.

BOTULAX® Administration Technique

BOTULAX® should be administered only by a qualified healthcare professional such as a physician. First, the physician will ensure that a BOTULAX® injection is needed. Next, they will determine the dose of BOTULAX® required, which depends on the patient’s age and the severity of the disease. Then, the injection site needs to be prepared, which means that the physician will identify the muscles that need treatment. The treatment site will be cleaned with an antiseptic, followed by a local anesthetic to numb the area. Alternatively, some physicians use an ice pack for the same purpose. The physician will then dilute BOTULAX® with normal saline in the following ratios:

For 100 units, 2.5 mL of saline
For 200 units, 5 mL of saline

Next, the provider will inject this BOTULAX® solution. Depending on the severity of the disease and the physician’s judgment, multiple injections may be needed. Finally, the provider will ask the patient not to rub or massage the injection site and call them for a follow-up visit.

BOTULAX® Side Effects

The side effects of BOTULAX® can be broadly classified into those caused by BOTULAX® itself and those related to the injection site. Let’s take a look:

Injection site problems: These include pain at the injection site, as well as redness, swelling, or bruising. These issues go away in a few days.
Muscle weakness: In some cases, the area where BOTULAX® is injected can experience weakness. This happens when the toxin spreads beyond the intended site.
Headache: Headaches after BOTULAX® are temporary and usually mild. They resolve on their own within a day or two.
Flu-like symptoms: Some people might experience a runny nose, body aches, or fatigue. These symptoms are benign and managed conservatively. They don’t last beyond a few days.
Ptosis: When BOTULAX® is administered around the eye and spreads beyond its intended muscle, it can cause eyelid drooping and double vision. Once the effects of BOTULAX® wear off, these symptoms disappear.
Difficulty swallowing: If BOTULAX® is injected near the neck can cause dysphagia and dry mouth.
Allergies: Allergies are uncommon but can range from mild to severe. People may experience itching, a runny nose, or a rash. In extreme cases, they may experience difficulty breathing, swelling of the lips and tongue, and edema. If the latter symptoms occur, a physician should be consulted right away.
