What Is TOBRADEX® Used For?

TOBRADEX® is a medication doctors and patients use to treat bacterial eye infections and the inflammation that comes with them. It has an antibiotic - tobramycin, with a corticosteroid - dexamethasone in its composition to help treat these conditions.  The medication works great against some of the common bacteria, such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus. Some of these bacteria can be involved in eye infections such as conjunctivitis, keratitis, and blepharitis. In cases where there is severe inflammation, TOBRADEX® helps alleviate the symptoms, which contribute to visual clarity and ease. Medical professionals often prescribe TOBRADEX® for post-surgical care to prevent bacterial infections and manage inflammation that may appear. Clinics looking to buy TOBRADEX® online should only purchase from accredited sources to ensure the medication's efficacy.

TOBRADEX® Administration Technique

TOBRADEX® needs to be applied with precision and in a sterile environment, whether it’s used as eye drops or ointment. Each mL of TOBRADEX® Ophthalmic Suspension contains 3 mg of tobramycin (0.3%) and 1 mg of dexamethasone (0.1%), which are preserved with benzalkonium chloride. Patients who are using eye drops should hold the dropper directly over the eye without touching it or any other surfaces to avoid contamination. Then, patients should squeeze a single drop and close their eyes gently.    It’s best to apply 1 to 2 drops into the eye every 4 hours, but doctors can increase the dosage if needed. If multiple drops are needed, patients should wait about five minutes before applying the next drop. If patients wish to use and buy TOBRADEX® ointment, a small amount (1.25 cm or one-half inch) should be applied inside the lower eyelid without touching the tube to the eye or hand. After application, the patient should close their eye and gently roll their eyeball in various directions to distribute the ointment.

TOBRADEX® Side Effects

There are several side effects associated with TOBRADEX®, and the most common ones include eye irritation, redness, blurred vision, discomfort, and eyelid swelling. These symptoms usually don’t last long and resolve if patients continue to use the medication to treat the infection. However, more serious side effects can happen, and they include increased intraocular pressure, which can lead to glaucoma if the medication is used long-term without appropriate monitoring. There is also a risk of cataract formation and delayed wound healing, particularly with prolonged use.  To minimize any side effects, it’s crucial to order TOBRADEX® online from certified and reliable pharmaceutical distributors. If your patients experience any of the following symptoms, appoint them to immediate medical care:
  • Sudden vision loss
  • Blurred or tunnel vision
  • Pain or swelling in the eyes
  • Seeing halos around lights
  • Irregular heartbeats
  • Shortness of breath
  • Dizziness
  • Passing out
  • Severe headache
  • Slurred speech
  • Trouble walking
  • Stiff muscles
  • High fever

Precautions When Using Tobradex®

There are several key precautions clinicians should adhere to when prescribing Tobradex®. Due to the presence of a corticosteroid, TOBRADEX® should not be used in cases where viral, fungal, or mycobacterial infections of the eye are suspected.  Also, doctors should continuously monitor intraocular pressure as the steroid component may increase the risk of glaucoma with long-term use. Regardless of whether you buy TOBRADEX® from reputable suppliers or not, caution is advised, especially if a patient has a known history of hypersensitivity to aminoglycosides.

TOBRADEX® vs. Competition

TOBRADEX® is an effective medicine in treating a variety of eye conditions. However, there are competitors such as Zylet and Maxitrol who also combine antibiotics with corticosteroids but differ in the specific components. Zylet contains loteprednol and tobramycin, which are known for their safety and efficacy. Meanwhile, Maxitrol combines neomycin, polymyxin B, and dexamethasone, which has been a standard in primary eye care. A benefit of choosing TOBRADEX® over some other competitors is its formulation balance. The new version of the medicine, TOBRADEX® ST, has less concentration of dexamethasone. This means there are fewer side effects and similar therapeutic effects to those of the previous version of the treatment.
