Lifting threads are used in aesthetic medicine as a noninvasive method of lifting and rejuvenating the skin. Made from materials like PDO (polydioxanone) and PLLA (poly-L-lactic acid), they are designed to lift sagging skin, reduce wrinkles, and restore facial contours.

What Are Lifting Threads Used For?

Lifting threads are used to address common signs of aging. They lift sagging skin, reduce wrinkles, restore facial contours, and improve overall skin texture. These threads can be strategically placed in areas such as the cheeks, jawline, brows, and neck to achieve natural-looking results.

The Difference Between PDO and PLLA Threads

PDO (polydioxanone) and PLLA (poly-L-lactic acid) threads are the two main types of lifting threads. PDO threads are made from a biodegradable, fully absorbable polymer. These sutures stimulate collagen production in the skin by triggering fibroblasts. They are more suitable for skin rejuvenation than PLLA sutures and provide a more immediate result.

PLLA threads also stimulate collagen production, but they do it over a longer period. They are made from the same material as SCULPTRA® and are a newer option. These sutures also improve skin volume and stimulate the production of Type 1 and Type 3 collagen. They take longer to dissolve, so they stimulate collagen production longer than PDO threads.

How Long Do Lifting Threads Last?

The effects of lifting threads vary depending on the patient’s skin maturity, lifestyle, and the type of threads used. PDO threads dissolve after six months, and the neo-collagenesis process lasts for between nine and 12 months. PLLA threads have a more gradual effect and are resorbed over a longer time frame (18-24 months), while neo-collagenesis lasts about 24 months.

Lifting Threads Administration Technique

Thread-lifting can be used as a standalone procedure or in combination with dermal fillers, neuromodulators, or surgery. It should be performed in an aseptic environment by trained medical personnel only. The procedure’s success hinges on patient suitability and accurate treatment planning. Patients with significant ptosis or obesity may see limited benefits.

Thread-lifting is done under local anesthesia. After the area has been numbed by lidocaine, an introducer port is inserted into the treatment area. The threads are introduced into the subdermal layer by pushing a pre-loaded microcannula through the port. Complications are rare but possible. The procedure requires pre-care and post-care.

Lifting Threads Side Effects

While generally safe, thread-lifting procedures may cause side effects and complications:

  • Thread migration or exposure
  • Paresthesia
  • Hematoma
  • Infection
  • Inflammation
  • Dimpling
  • Hair loss
  • Inflammation
  • Salivary gland, blood vessel, or nerve injury
  • Persistent asymmetry
  • Moderate impairment of facial motions

Usually, the side effects are localized and are resolved on their own after a while:

  • Bleeding
  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Pain or discomfort
  • Asymmetry

It is important that only medical professionals use and buy PDO and PLLA threads. Training and correct technique are essential to avoid complications such as infections, abscesses, and injury. It’s important for patients to have realistic expectations about the outcomes of lifting thread procedures. While they are effective, they are not as effective as surgical facelifts.
